Lymphoedema is an abnormal collection of protein rich fluid ( lymph) that causes swelling of a body part, usually an extremity. Stagnation of lymph circulation compromises the immune system as well as causing other troublesome skin conditions.

Lymphoedema differs from other oedemas, as it is life long and accumulated protein rich waste products are trapped in the interstial space of subcutaneous tissue, just below the skin surface.

Manual lymph drainage (MLD) as offered at G.E.A.R., is a gentle pumping massage researched and developed to assist in the treatment of specific disorders of the lymphatic system. Lightness of movement and slow pace in MLD is of paramount importance in treating lymphoedema. MLD reduces OEDEMA of lymphatics.

Treatment generally lasts 1½ to 2 hours for full body treatment. As MLD is a specialised treatment, only certified MLD therapists treat your lymphoedema. The therapist will advise on particular steps that need to be followed before and after MLD treatment, including skin protection, diet, restricted activities etc.

LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY (L.L.L.T.) plays a significant part in treating lymphoedema as it supports the healing and maintenance of the skin. Laser also aids in regeneration of both vein and lymph vessels, increasing microcirculation. The MACROPHAGE cell is a phagocyte and the body's own scavenger.

These cells are the oldest and strongest part of the immune system. Macrophages engulf and destroy foreign particles and bacteria as they circulate through the blood and move directly through the tissue by squeezing through intercellular spaces. Laser light is absorbed by macrophages causing them to release chemical mediators, which settle oedema and stimulate the proliferation of fibroblasts cells that produce collagen.

COLLAGEN makes up appro x 70% of the dry weight of the skin. Laser therapy results in production of collagen that is strong and more orderly, resulting in smoother skin texture. Whatever other therapy is used in treating lymphoedema, combining (L.L.L.T.) will quicken the desired result, which is reduction of the swelling and encouraging growth of new lymph vessels to re-balance the lymphatic system.
